Details
The fuel needed is the distance divided by the efficiency: a car doing 15 km/L over 300 km needs 300 ÷ 15 = 20 liters. Multiply by the price per liter for the total cost, or divide the cost by the distance for the cost per kilometer.
Catalog efficiency is measured under fixed conditions — real numbers vary with traffic, air conditioning and speed. The most reliable input is your own figure: divide the liters of a recent fill-up by the kilometers driven since, and use that. Gas prices also differ by station and membership, so enter the price you actually pay.
The calculation covers fuel only — taxes and highway tolls are not included. For trip expense reports, add tolls separately. Knowing your cost per kilometer also makes it easy to compare against commuter passes, car sharing or rentals.
FAQ
Is catalog efficiency the same as real efficiency?
No. Catalog figures are measured under fixed conditions; real-world numbers vary by a few tenths with traffic, air conditioning and driving style. Measuring your own fill-ups gives the most accurate input.
Does it work for hybrids and EVs?
Any car with a km/L figure works. For EVs, convert your consumption (km/kWh) and electricity price per kWh — the same approach applies.
Are highway tolls included?
No. The calculation covers fuel only; add tolls separately for trip budgeting.
Are the numbers I enter sent anywhere?
No. All computation happens locally in your browser and nothing you enter is transmitted.
