Details
Degrees-minutes-seconds (DMS) divides each degree into 60 minutes (′) and each minute into 60 seconds (″), traditionally used in GPS coordinates and astronomy. Conversion to decimal degrees adds degrees + minutes ÷ 60 + seconds ÷ 3600 (30°45′30″ = 30 + 45/60 + 30/3600 = 30.758333°).
Converting back from decimal degrees: the integer part is degrees, (fractional part × 60) gives minutes, and the remaining fraction × 60 gives seconds. This is useful when GPS coordinates are required in either DMS or decimal format.
Conditions: enter values with absolute value up to 360 (360° = one full rotation). Negative values are accepted (for west longitude and south latitude). Inputs are never transmitted; all computation happens locally in your browser.
FAQ
What is DMS (degrees-minutes-seconds)?
It is an angle format that divides each degree into 60 minutes (′) and each minute into 60 seconds (″). Traditionally used in GPS coordinates and astronomy.
Which format do GPS devices typically use?
Map applications generally use decimal degrees, while aviation and nautical charts use DMS. This tool converts in both directions for either use case.
What does a negative angle mean?
In latitude it indicates south, and in longitude it indicates west. The tool preserves the sign during conversion.
What happens if minutes or seconds exceed 60?
The tool computes as-is (30°75′ is equivalent to 31°15′). Normalization (carrying over) is not performed automatically.

Did you know?
One degree equals 60 minutes equals 3600 seconds. A GPS coordinate like 35°39′31″ converts to decimal as 35 + 39/60 + 31/3600 = 35.658611°.
