What is 2026 in Roman numerals?

2026 is MMXXVI. Split it into 2000 + 20 + 6, then combine MM + XX + VI. The same notation works for a year on a keepsake or a design. The complete chart below covers 1–100; use the Roman numeral converter for other integers.

The seven symbols: I, V, X, L, C, D and M

Roman numerals combine the following symbols. This guide uses subtractive notation, where 4 is IV and 9 is IX.

I V X L C D M
1 5 10 50 100 500 1000

When to add and when to subtract

Add values that run from largest to smallest: VIII = 5 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 8 and LX = 50 + 10 = 60.

In this notation, the six subtractive pairs are IV, IX, XL, XC, CD and CM. For example, IV = 5 - 1 = 4 and XC = 100 - 10 = 90. Write 49 as XLIX (40 + 9), rather than IL, and 99 as XCIX (90 + 9), rather than IC.

Split the number by place value

  • 24: 20 + 4 = XX + IV = XXIV
  • 49: 40 + 9 = XL + IX = XLIX
  • 99: 90 + 9 = XC + IX = XCIX
  • 2026: 2000 + 20 + 6 = MM + XX + VI = MMXXVI
  • 3999: 3000 + 900 + 90 + 9 = MMM + CM + XC + IX = MMMCMXCIX

In this notation, I, X, C and M repeat at most three times in a row. V, L and D do not repeat: use X for 10, C for 100 and M for 1000.

How to convert a Roman numeral or a number

  1. Open the Roman numeral converter.
  2. Enter 2026 or MMXXVI. The tool detects the direction and displays the result as you type.
  3. Select Copy to reuse the result. Conversion runs in your browser.

Number input supports integers from 1 to 3999. Zero, negative numbers, decimals and numbers above 3999 are outside the supported range. Lowercase Roman input such as mmxxvi is accepted.

The reverse conversion is permissive and also reads IIII as 4. It is not a spelling validator. To check the conventional spelling, take the resulting number and convert it back into Roman numerals.

Frequently asked questions

Is 4 written IV or IIII?

This chart and the converter’s number-to-Roman output use IV. IIII also appears on some clock faces. When transcribing a specific object, follow the notation on that object.

Are Ⅳ and IV the same characters?

Both can represent four, but they have different character codes. Ⅳ is one dedicated Unicode character (U+2163); IV is the two Latin letters I and V. Enter Latin letters I, V, X, L, C, D and M in this converter.

What about zero or numbers above 3999?

They are outside the I–M notation and conversion range used here. The tool does not interpret extended or historical systems.

Does this convert Japanese era years too?

Roman numeral conversion changes how an integer is written. To convert a Japanese era such as Reiwa into a calendar year, use the Japanese era converter or the era conversion guide.
