“What is the tax-exclusive price of an item that costs 8,800 yen including tax?” “What is the tax-inclusive price of a 3,200 yen item?” Do these calculations trip you up every time?

In this article, we explain how to calculate Japanese consumption tax (消費税), covering tax-inclusive and tax-exclusive formulas, the reduced 8% rate, and rounding rules - with concrete examples.

There are two rates: 8% and 10%

Since October 2019, Japan has two consumption tax rates:

Rate Applies to Period
Standard 10% Most goods and services Since Oct 2019
Reduced 8% Food and beverages (excluding alcohol and dining out), newspapers Since Oct 2019

The reduced 8% rate applies to food and beverages bought to take home (excluding alcohol) and newspapers under a periodic subscription. Eating at a restaurant is taxed at 10%, while groceries from a supermarket are taxed at 8%.

How the rate breaks down: The 10% rate consists of 7.8% national tax plus 2.2% local tax. The 8% rate is 6.24% plus 1.76%. For everyday calculation you can simply use 10% or 8% as a whole.

Tax-exclusive vs tax-inclusive

Tax-exclusive (add tax to the base price)

When the listed price excludes tax, multiply the base price by the rate:

Tax-inclusive = base price × 1.10 (or × 1.08)
Tax amount = base price × 0.10 (or × 0.08)

Example: base price 2,000 yen at 10%

  • Tax = 2,000 × 0.10 = 200 yen
  • Total = 2,000 × 1.10 = 2,200 yen

Tax-inclusive (find the tax inside the price)

When the listed price includes tax, divide by the rate:

Base price = tax-inclusive price ÷ 1.10 (or ÷ 1.08)
Tax amount = tax-inclusive price − base price

Example: 5,500 yen including tax (10%)

  • Base = 5,500 ÷ 1.10 = 5,000 yen
  • Tax = 5,500 − 5,000 = 500 yen

Caution: The result changes dramatically depending on whether a price is taxed at 8% or 10%. 8,800 yen at 10% (8,000 + 800) is not the same as 8,800 yen at 8%. Always check which rate applies to the item.

What qualifies for the reduced 8% rate

The reduced rate applies to:

  • Food and beverages: packed food and drinks (excluding alcohol and dining out)
  • Newspapers: published at least twice a week under a periodic subscription

One thing to watch: the same product can be taxed differently depending on where you eat it.

  • A bento box from the supermarket (takeaway) → 8%
  • Eating it in the food court or inside the store → 10%

Receipts list “10% items” and “8% items” separately, so it is easy to check.

Rounding rules

When the tax amount produces fractions of a yen, the seller may choose to round down, round up or round to the nearest yen.

Example: base price 999 yen at 10%

  • Tax = 999 × 0.10 = 99.9 yen
  • Round down: tax 99 yen → total 1,098 yen
  • Round nearest: tax 100 yen → total 1,099 yen

If you want to reproduce a receipt exactly, check how the store rounds.

Summary

  • Japan has two rates: 10% standard and 8% reduced
  • Tax-inclusive: base × 1.10; tax-exclusive: total ÷ 1.10
  • The 8% rate covers food and beverages (excluding alcohol and dining out) and newspapers
  • Rounding is chosen by each seller
  • The Tools Hub calculator handles it all in your browser

FAQ

How do I find the tax-exclusive price from a tax-inclusive price?

Divide by 1.10 (or 1.08 for the reduced rate). Example: 1,100 yen ÷ 1.10 = 1,000 yen base price, 100 yen tax.

Which rate applies, 8% or 10%?

Most goods and services are 10%. Food and beverages bought to take home (excluding alcohol) and newspapers are 8%. Note that dining in a restaurant is always 10%.

What is the quickest way to calculate tax on a calculator?

Multiply the base price by 1.10 for the total. For the base price from a tax-inclusive amount, divide by 1.10.

What happens to fractions of a yen?

Sellers can round down, up or to the nearest yen. The calculator lets you pick the rounding method too.
